Rory McIlroy has been plagued by slow starts in the majors of late, but he's found a low one in Tulsa to lead by a shot after the first round of the PGA Championship.

Americans Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge are in hot pursuit on four under with Abraham Ancer and Justin Thomas just a shot further back.

World number one Scottie Scheffler started brightly but faded as conditions proved to be much tougher in the afternoon than the morning.

  3. Post update

    Herbert -3 (17*)

Lucas Herbert powers his tee shot on the par-three eighth into the heart of the green. The Australian is a little tentative with his birdie try from 35 feet though, pulling up four short.

A late tester but one that he's equal to. One to play in the fading light.

  4. Fitzpatrick finishes with a 68

    Fitzpatrick -2 (68)

Very impressive round of 68 for Matthew Fitzpatrick after he taps in for a stress-free par at the last to sit on two under and just three off Rory McIlroy's lead.

Given the tougher conditions in the afternoon, it's an even more impressive round from the Yorkshireman, who showed all the tools needed to win one of these majors.

His back nine, with just one birdie but no dropped shots, was particularly impressive for how much in control of his game he was.

  5. Post update

    Niemann -2 (17)

Joaquin Niemann pleads with his ball to stop on the 17th green after he gets some decent spin on his approach.

It's not stopping though and he's going to be faced with a 25-footer from the fringe. A two-putt par and on he goes.

  6. Post update

    Fitzpatrick -2 (17)

He does things his own way does Matthew Fitzpatrick - keeping the flag in even on short putts and going left hand below right when chipping.

It works though, as he almost drains his effort from off the right side of the 17th green, burning the edge as it just slides by.

It's a tap-in par though after that unorthodox but effective chipping method.

  7. Post update

    Herbert -3 (16*)

Lucas Herbert cuts a frustrated figure after his birdie putt on the seventh, his 16th, runs out of pace six inches from the hole.

I'm sure if you'd have offered him three under with two play five hours ago he'd have taken it.

  8. Some Fitzmagic on show

    Fitzpatrick -2 (16)

Remarkable recovery chip shot from Fitzpatrick that enables him to save par on 16 and remain right in the hunt on two under.

Wonderful creativity shown by the Englishman there.

  9. Thomas on tough putting conditions

Justin Thomas’ one major victory came at the 2017 US PGA Championship, and after shooting 67 in the tougher afternoon conditions he’s well in contention.

He told Sky Sports that the toughest part of the round today was putting on what he described as bumpy greens.

“You know in Oklahoma you’re going to get a pretty good amount of wind, it’s just a case of how much,” Thomas said after his round.

“Those guys got it a bit gusty in the morning and as the day progresses it usually does start to blow.

“But the greens, they were so bumpy. It was tough. It’s not the kind of day when you want to be missing a lot of greens and trying to save par.

“It doesn’t matter how good you’re putting if you keep having to make five and six footers eventually it’s going to be hard to keep making them.

“Everyone’s putting in the same conditions - I’m not the only one out there who has to deal with it.

“You just have to be creative, maybe play a little bit more break and let it bounce in or change your speed depending on how you want to make the putt.”

  10. Post update

    Niemann -2 (16)

A two-putt par for Joaquin Niemann on the 16th keeps him tied with Mito Pereira in the fight for bragging rights.

Has he got one more birdie in him? Let's find out...

  11. Post update

    Niemann -2 (15)

Joaquin Niemann is wearing the sort of v-neck t-shirt that would probably draw sniffy looks from the members at your course.

The Chilean is not happy with his second to the par-four 16th. It's pin-high, 20 feet left. The flag is indicating the wind is whipping in from that side and he played for that to help his ball, which it clearly didn't.

Still, it's a chance to climb above his compatriot Mito Pereira, who shot a two-under 70 earlier in the day

  12. Up and down Herbert

    Herbert -3 (15*)

Lucas Herbert, who is making his fourth US PGA Championship appearance, is continuing to hover around the right end of the leaderboard.

But the 25-year-old world number 46's up and down second nine continues. He's only had one par in six holes but three birdies and two bogeys sees him just two off the lead.

  13. Scrappy stuff from top three

    Scheffler +1 (71), Rahm +3 (73), Morikawa +2 (72)

Not one of the top three in the world rankings could shoot under par in the tougher afternoon conditions as they combine for six over in the end.

It's a remarkable par for Scheffler who sends a curling putt home for a four to sign for a 71 and avoid finishing with three straight bogeys.

It's a par from the bunker for Rahm but he'll be very disappointed with his 73, while Morikawa was never at his best and did well in the end to shoot no worse than his 72.

They'll all hope for better when they go out early tomorrow.

  14. Post update

    Scheffler +1, Rahm +3, Morikawa +1 (17)

Scheffler is wayward yet again off the tee and this time he's found the water hazard down the right hand side of the 18th and has to take a drop.

He hammers an angry third on the green so still has a chance of a four.

  15. Fowler finishes up

    Fowler +1 (71)

Rickie Fowler, shades on, moustache clipped, is chipping from the back of the 18th. Decent effort that, pulling up three feet short. He feels he could've done better.

Nudge that in though and that will be a very respectable 71...

  16. Bogeys for big two

    Scheffler +1, Rahm +3, Morikawa +1 (17)

It's not a bad bunker shot from Scheffler but it's a bad par putt that he's pushed out to the right and whistles by the hole as he sees another shot slip away.

Rahm follows him in carding a five here as well and his day has just not been a good one at all, with barely anything to shout about as he drops to three over.

  17. Thomas within two of lead

    Thomas -3 (67)

If Justin Thomas had rolled in the birdie putt he's just holed on the 18th about two hours ago, we'd have heard the cheers on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

A marvellous putt from the American is greeted by the sound of one man clapping... maybe two. It's early evening in Oklahoma, the sun is setting, but JT's tea will taste good tonight.

  18. Niemann nails another

    Niemann -2 (13)

Joaquin Niemann is on the move. The Chilean is among the last players out and knocks in a birdie on the 13th. That's three in five holes for the 22-year-old world number 16.

  19. Lowry finishes level

    Lowry E (70)

Shane Lowry finishes where he started, at level par.

It's a round that saw plenty of colour, with three bogeys cancelling out three birdies, while there was a dip in the water to boot.

  20. Post update

    Scheffler E, Rahm +2, Morikawa +1 (16)

Scottie Scheffler has spent more time in the woods than Robin Hood on his back nine and again he's forced to stab a short iron at the green while standing right up against the trunk of a great big tree.

And again he comes up short and drops into a bunker that will leave him short sided with a tough escape to come.

Rahm goes long with his approach in what again must go down as a big miss.
