Like the Nike Air Max 1 and 90 G in previous seasons, the Nike Air Pegasus 89 G has been a consistent performer at this year’s major championships alongside two more performance-treated silhouettes in matching colorways. That is to say, while the Air Zoom Infinity Tour 2 and Victory Tour 3 are designed to be worn in intense competition by elite athletes, the Air Pegasus 89 G is aimed at fans who have a more casual relationship with the game and view sneakers as a part of that picture.
Now Nike has revealed the NRG theme that will touch down on the Pegasus 89 for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst: “Accept and Embrace”. Taking cues from the event’s host state North Carolina, the sneaker is treated to shades of dark and light blue, a theme made famous by Michael Jordan’s alma mater. But while some will come for the color scheme, others will stay for the materials. A variety of textures is utilized across the Swooshes, overlays, tongues and sockliners varying from hairy and smooth suede to soft terry cloth, while the words “Accept” and “Embrace” show up on the tongue labels, shoelace ends and insoles. The heel portions of the sneakers reveal the number 2, representing the famed Pinehurst No. 2 golf course where the tournament will be played. Lastly, the marbled outsole is a pleasing combination of many of the hues used throughout the upper section.
Take a look at the sneakers in the gallery above and note the release date of June 7.
