Are dogs allowed in NYC parks? ›

Areas for Dogs in Parks

Some areas in City parks allow dogs to be off-leash. Dogs in off-leash areas must have dog licenses and their owners must carry proof of the dog's rabies vaccination. Dog runs are large, fenced-in areas where dogs can exercise unleashed. You can bring up to three dogs at a time to a dog run.

Dogs must be leashed in Central Park from 9:00 am–9:00 pm daily. Off-leash hours in Central Park are from 6:00 am–9:00 am and 9:00 pm–1:00 am. Please note: Dogs must always be leashed in the following locations, even during off-leash hours.

Even during off-leash hours, dogs must always be leashed in the following locations: Arthur Ross Pinetum, Bridle Path, Cedar Hill, Children's Glade (Great Hill area), Conservatory Garden, East Green, Kerbs Boathouse Plaza, The North Woods and The Ravine, The Ramble, Shakespeare Garden, Strawberry Fields, Turtle Pond ...

Brooklyn Park offers two dog parks; Brookdale Park and the Environmental Nature Area. Leashes are required in all other parks and trails.

Dogs are not permitted in playgrounds, zoos, fountains, ball fields, on basketball/handball/tennis courts, in swimming pools/facilities, bathing areas, and New York City beaches (see exceptions below).

Dogs in public must be on a leash no more than 6 feet long. For information on parks and dog runs in the city, visit nycgovparks.org/facilities/dogruns.

Dogs need exercise, including play, but playtime needs to be a good experience for everyone. Promise yourself that if you have any doubts about whether your dog or others are acting appropriately, the play is getting too rough, or your dog is not having fun, you will LEAVE.

If left alone for long periods, dogs may engage in barking, howling, digging, chewing, or eating dangerous items, or substances. They are also at risk of escaping or being stolen if left alone in the garden. Therefore, Holidays4Dogs recommends never leaving your dog outside unattended.

Physical activity

If your dog spends hours alone in the garden, don't expect it to play or exercise on its own. Taking the animal out for a walk will give it much more complete exercise, as your dog will have your company and plenty of fun stimuli for it to enjoy.
