First Look: The Asus ExpertBook P5 Is a Slick 'Lunar Lake' AI Laptop for the Office (2024)

Asus will soon bring one of its first AI PCs to the workplace with the ExpertBook P5 (P5405). Revealed at Computex 2024, the reimagined ExpertBook line is a next-generation AI laptop designed for pros, whether you work in an office downtown or from home just downstairs.

Packed with Intel Core Ultra hardware and the latest AI features, the ExpertBook P5 focuses on enhancing productivity, security, and user experience primarily through the new AI capabilities offered in Windows 11 Pro. It has built-in commercial-grade security and a sleek, durable design, which only help this AI-enhanced notebook.

Your First Glance at the Asus ExpertBook P5

Asus is cagey about the specific processor used in the ExpertBook P5, but it's built around an Intel Core Ultra system-on-chip with a multi-core CPU, an integrated GPU, and a powerful neural processing unit (NPU). Asus claims the NPU can produce 45+ trillion operations per second (TOPS) but that the entire chip can combine NPU, CPU, and GPU to generate more than 100 TOPS. It's one of Intel's Lunar Lake chips, but Intel has not yet shared specific chip models that will come in this forthcoming processor series.

Asus brags about the new flagship processor's chip architecture as a "three AI engine" design that combines CPU, GPU, and NPU. The company mentions explicitly a new GPU with XMX acceleration, one of the fundamental technologies of Intel Arc graphics. It also leverages integrated graphics for AI performance to boost productivity, creation, and gaming. (We have much more about Lunar Lake in our deep dive.)

Other hardware details have been shared, including up to 32GB LPDDR5X RAM, dual SSD storage with up to 3TB capacity, and support for Wi-Fi 7. In our brief hands-on time with the machine at Computex, we also noted that the laptop has Thunderbolt 4, USB-A, and full-size HDMI outputs.

Asus ExpertBook P5, Now With AI Features for Work

Most of what we know about the ExpertBook P5 is that Asus claims to have reimagined productivity with AI. More specifically, Asus mentions AI file search (which we suspect is what they're calling Windows 11 Copilot Recall), which allows speedy file search and retrieval using natural language queries.

Generative meeting notes and AI transcription give you AI-written summaries of meetings, with multilingual transcription, language translation, and details for tasks and follow-ups.

Asus also brags about Adaptive Dimming and Adaptive Lock, new AI-powered features that adjust screen brightness and lock your laptop screen when you're away, respectively. These features don't sound new, but perhaps they now rely on the NPU to free up more CPU processing power for productive tasks.

Finally, Asus has AI Noise Cancellation and AI Voiceprint that uses a deep learning database to enhance voice quality in virtual meetings and videos. However, these Asus features are added on top of Windows 11 Copilot features, which allow more task automation, information retrieval, and even AI-enhanced security.

An Expertly Trim Design

When we saw the product, what really stood out to us was the sleek aluminum chassis, which looks beautiful and makes the slim laptop sturdy enough to meet MIL-STD 810H durability standards while still being thin and light. The 14-inch laptop can survive bumps and bangs but weighs just 2.86 pounds and has a 180-degree lay-flat hinge.

The ExpertBook P5 has an optimized cooling system that cools the internals whether the laptop is open or closed. Meanwhile, Asus' ExpertBook keyboard has 1.5mm key travel, which is what is currently provided on Asus laptops, but the ExpertBook P5 gets larger keycaps for better typing comfort and accuracy. The keyboard is matched with a larger touchpad for easy cursor control.

Asus' Trademark Super-Sweet Display

The ExpertBook P5 has a 14-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. That taller ratio provides more vertical space for working with documents or browsing the web and has become a common feature in productivity-focused systems. Around the display panel is an impressively slim bezel, which still has room for an IR camera and a physical camera cover.

The 2.5K resolution (likely 2,560 by 1,600, but Asus hasn't shared the exact specification) and 144Hz panel should look sharp and fast for everything from documents to high-frame-rate video. An anti-glare screen coating improves readability, even under fluorescent lights and other high-reflection environments.

Asus Includes Commercial-Grade Security

As a business machine, the ExpertBook P5 combines the AI PC with professional-grade security. Windows 11 secure-core protection, a NIST-155-ready BIOS, and a TPM 2.0 chip will keep your data secure and your IT team happy, while easy biometric logins with facial recognition and fingerprint sensing make secure sign-on a snap.

You'll even find some physical security, with a Kensington lock slot for locking the laptop down in high-risk environments where someone might want to walk off with your computer when you aren't looking.

No Word on Pricing Yet

Asus hasn't announced pricing or a launch date for the ExpertBook P5, but a product page for the new laptop claims that the new model will launch in the second half of 2024. It's not uncommon for Computex announcements to name new products and give them a vague arrival timeline so that "the end of the year" can be anywhere between Halloween and New Year's Day. In the meantime, return for more on this and other professional AI PCs for the office.
